The feminist punk music movement Riot Grrrl took root in the early 1990’s throughout the Pacific Northwest. Bands within the movement (such as Bratmobile and The Third Sex) created punk music that addresses homophobia, violence towards women, racism, sexism, and other issues related to feminism. By writing politically charged (and catchy) lyrics into punk music, Riot Grrrl bands were able to spread their messages to concertgoers and music aficionados who might not have been otherwise exposed to those social positions. Before the movement mostly men populated the punk scene; Riot Grrrl served as an inspiration for women who wanted to occupy the same field men had for years prior. Songwriters used music as a tool to engage the public and rally other women to the cause.
