Wearing a safety pin on your shirt has become a way to indicate that you are an ally to people whose rights have been put in danger by the Trump administration. Shortly after the 2016 election, #safetypin emerged as a mild form of protest that communicated to victims of discrimination that there were, in fact, still people out there who cared about them. Safety pins are easy to get a hold of and are easy to wear, meaning that virtually anyone can show their support. If a victimized person is ever in need of help, they know they can count on someone wearing one to accept them regardless of their race, sex, gender, or sexuality. The pins can also remind people who wear them of their roles in a diverse society, thus helping to incite them to action.
