The Silence=Death Project was started at the height of the AIDS crisis as a consciousness – raising group. This group was the work of a six person collective in New York City, who collectively felt that the stigma surrounding the disease was causing even more deaths, and that the government was not doing enough to provide solutions or a cure to the outbreak. In 1987, the group decided to create a poster to be plastered around New York City. Instead of using photographic images, which may exclude groups who were not depicted, the group printed posters with a pink triangle – a reclaiming of a symbol used to persecute homosexuals in Nazi Germany. The Silence=Death posters proclaim that silence about the AIDS epidemic must be broken in order to survive. By presenting people with brief and provocative statement, this group forces viewers to consider their own agency and the actions they have (or haven’t) taken towards decreasing stigmatization and finding a cure.
