In his work “250 cm Line Tattooed on 6 Paid People” (2002), which took place in Havana, Cuba, Santiago Sierra addresses structures of power that often lurk below the surface of society without being brought to light. Due to the need for money, the participants in this work would agree to have a mark on their skin for life. By hiring underprivileged individuals, who, in exchange for money, are willing to permanently tattoo their body, this work confronts the effects of the capitalist economy and wage labor on those who are most exploited but remain the least visible – illegal immigrants, the urban poor, and minority groups. By inviting the privileged art public to view this work, Sierra is drawing attention the different “prices” of bodies and the ubiquity of unequal relations supported and perpetuated by capitalism. By revealing this without proposing a solution, Sierra forces the viewer to grapple with an negotiate their own reaction to it and any futures steps they may take.
