The NSK Pavilion was an exhibition in Venice that took place during the 57th Venice Biennale. Countries represented at the Biennale usually presented their art in “pavilions” specifically set aside for them in either one of the two Biennale sites. The NSK pavilion stood as an independent pavilion, bringing attention to the Biennale’s nationalistic undertones and seeking to redefine ideas of the organization of peoples. This pavilion offered viewers a passport to the NSK State in Time, a utopian alternative to the nation state that organized peoples without physical territory – a state “in time” rather than in space. The process of getting a passport, which required jumping through many pointless and time-consuming hoops, drew attention to the struggles immigrants face in attempting to gain citizenship. The pavilion also featured a newspaper-like publication available for any viewer to take with several articles engaging with contemporary issues that have troubled countries: migration, citizenship, heritage, and identity.
