Argentinian artist Marta Minujín constructed The Parthenon of Books (2017) from books donated by the public from a shortlist of over 170 titles that are either currently or formerly banned. Constructed on a Nazi book-burning site in Kassel, Germany, the structure is replica of the iconic Parthenon, a temple constructed in the ancient city-state of Athens, Greece. Visitors were invited to participate in many events that took place on the stage of the Parthenon, including reading from once-banned books in numerous languages, reciting their own texts or poems, or participating in dance or alternative performances. At a later point in time, the Parthenon of Books was dismantled, and all of the once forbidden books were redistributed to the general public. This work, in emphasizing resistance against censorship, also creates a shared community of readers through the circulation of ideas. It also brings attention to the charged history of space and rejects that history at the same time, redefining a space with what was once destroyed there.
