¡Únete! Join Us! was Jodi Colomer’s project presented in the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2017. There is no designated path viewers must take to explore the installation – they are free to move about the space within the pavilion in any direction. In the perimeter rooms, there are projection screens with videos and sets of bleachers for viewing. There are scenes of large groups traveling together and helping each other, carrying all of their belongings on bikes or in trailers, and a woman wearing headphones teaching an intently focused, and somewhat coordinated, group to dance. These videos, focused on the idea of nomadism within an urban environment, invite the viewer into their collective community. They imagine a space without the boundaries and exclusions many modern nations have established, and in doing so, help the viewer envision a society more inclusive than the one in which they live. This can help viewers imagine strategies for living different from those implemented by society and history.
