Many people are reluctant to alter and improve their relationship to society and the natural environment. Many are unaware of the extent to which actions as simple as recycling, voting, carpooling, and taking public transportation can transform the world they live in. Tomás Saraceno, with his piece, In Orbit, creates a space in which each participant is made highly aware both of their own and of others’ every movement. In Orbit is a cobweb-like net, set 25 meters above the ground, on which participants can crawl around, their every step sending vibrations across the net to be felt by others. Traversing the web is terrifying to some and thrilling to others, but either way, it causes people to navigate their environment in an unusual and unconventional manner. In Orbit, by fulfilling Saraceno’s boyhood dream of living in a floating city, affirms that all people are capable of transforming the present world into the one of their dreams.
