For Alexandra Pirici, the site of her performance is just as important as its content. Her thoughtful engagement with place imbues her work with layers of significance that continue to unravel as the performance develops. For Skulptur Projekte Munster, she located her performance at Münster’s former town council and court chambers. Drawing many of the city’s tourists, this site hosted the famed Peace of Westphalia treaties of 1648. Not only did these diplomatic treaties bring an end to a war, but they also laid the foundation for the creation of the modern nation-state. As Pirici’s performers created different iterations of human sculpture, they opened up this history and subjected it to wider networks of references and associations across time and place. Their bodily constructions reveal the fabricated nature of borders and the nations they divide. Ultimately, Pirici’s work imagines a world where transnational, inclusive dialogue renders the justifications for borders utterly void.
