The Patriot Library restores censored materials to the public domain through the use of a nomadic resource. A firm belief in the uncensored right to the pursuit of knowledge led the artist collective Finishing School to create a traveling library. Their collection consists of books, periodicals, photographs, and other forms of media that were all censored by The Patriot Act. In response to the terrorists acts of September 11, 2001, congress passed legislation that allowed the government to censor documents deemed potentially dangerous, which covered topics possibly used to research the attacks. The government also used tactics of intimidation, and violated the privacy rights of library patrons. Thus, Finishing School’s library not only provides free access to these documents, but also does not keep records of its patrons’ personal information or consultation of materials. By reinstating the power to chose to the people, this anti-censorship library creates a world where information is universally accessible.
