Ultra-Red’s public sound interventions interrupt the flow of everyday life, forcing passersby to confront the different forms of oppression experienced by marginalized peoples. The militant sound collective compiled one-minute audio recordings from fifteen international artists and activists, who were asked to respond to the question “What is the sound of the war on the poor?” Ultra-Red compiled these recordings into a volume, which they posted online to their open-access label, Public Records. The recordings, ranging from spoken word to field recordings to appropriated sound bites, exist not only online, but have also made interventions directly into the public sphere. These interventions are announced with yellow posters whose text reads “This Is the Sound of the War on the Poor.” When viewers come into contact with the work, the sounds of ‘war’ interrupt their everyday experience of the world. Ultra-Red compels viewers to confront these ‘wars’ that are normally silenced by the state.
