Yoko Ono (Wish Tree), 1981

on

Yoko Ono – yes, the very Yoko who broke up the Beatles – brings imagination and participation to the forefront in her work “Wish Tree” (1981). In her work that has been installed in locations across the globe, Ono plants a tree native to the site of installation and invites viewers to tie a written wish to the tree (except during the winter months, when the tree is more vulnerable). She instructs the viewer to “As your friends to do the same” and “Keep wishing. Until the branches are covered with wishes.” By asking the viewer to conceive of something they wish for, no matter how impractical or improbable, Ono compels the viewer to imagine a better future, and in doing so, to re-imagine what could be in the present. She encourages the viewer to situate their dream within the future and the present. By bringing attention to this “wish”, she provides the viewer with a space to consider steps towards realizing it.
