The World Wall: A Vision of the Future without Fear is traveling around the world in the pursuit of peace and understanding through cross-cultural collaboration. Conceived by American Chicana artist Judith Baca, this growing mural travels from country to country, aiming to create a universal language that redefines the possibility of peaceful intercultural relations through the hands of many artists and collaborators. The mural’s mobility shatters typical conceptions of what it means to create a mural. Murals are usually necessarily rooted in and created for specific communities, but the World Wall has no grounding. Instead, its transience asserts the interconnectedness of today’s world and the importance of cultural overlap. How are we to understand one another if we refuse to engage with our different cultural perspectives? Baca’s mural responds to this question by uniting different perspectives from communities all over the world to create an ever-expanding conception of the possibility of a peaceful future.
