Throughout their The Joshua Tree 2017 tour, the Irish band U2 decided to use their fame and the large venues they perform at to their advantage. The band felt that current events, namely the 2016 United States presidential election and the shifting political attitudes towards immigrants resonated with their older album The Joshua Tree. As concert attendees filed into the venues, poems by several artists (including Alberto Ríos, Walt Whitman, and Langston Hughes) scrolled on a 200 x 45 feet video screen. While the band performed The Joshua Tree, the screen showed politically charged scenes that related to the songs. Videos featured migrants walking along bare stretches of American highway, a burnt forest, and included a reference to President Trump and his unwelcoming attitudes towards migrants, refugees and women. Though the album was written in the 80’s during a time of political unrest, U2 used their current fame to their advantage and were able to reach a large audience to expose the relevance of the songs in our current political climate.
