Go to New York City today, and expect to hear people complaining about food prices. To eat at a place that has an inherent social atmosphere and doesn’t hastily push you out door is not cheap. In 1971 a group of artists opened a restaurant in SoHo, NYC called FOOD. The concept for the space was to create a place for artists to enjoy cheap food that was prepared by artists. Also, to provide a space for people to connect, with those around them. The meals were communal and there was no order taking. The kitchen was open to the dining room and artists would take turns cooking the meals. The restaurant acted as a community space where ideas were shared as well as food. In a seemingly small way, the act of eating a meal with a large group of people who you may not know allows for social interaction on a scale that is almost nonexistent these days.
