The upkeep of a high traffic space is important, however it is often unrecognized. Part of the reason for this is that most of the cleaning that takes place in these places happens after hours. People are not directly faced with the image of someone mopping floors or cleaning toilets. The artist, Mierle Laderman Ukeles acted out these maintenance tasks at the Wadsworth Atheneum in 1973, in order to force visitors to see these acts in present time. She was also making a connection between the tasks expected of women and similar ones carried out by low paid janitors. She confronted the public with the image of inequality through the small act of washing floors. Her decision to perform this piece in a public space allowed for her reach a broad audience. Visitors had no choice but to step around her, walk on the floor she just cleaned and in turn be apart of the inequality she was calling out.
