Walk around an American city’s busy streets and you’ll find lots of public parking spots for private vehicles, but no public spaces truly dedicated to fostering community. In our society streets are not destinations but places to get through while speeding by encased in hard metal vehicles. For Michael Rakowitz’s P (lot): Proposition I the artist stretched custom automobile covers over tent poles to create temporary shelters meant to be used by urban campers. These mobile spaces can be “parked” in parking spaces as long as the owners pay the meters and respect the signs. Proposition I is a way that citizens can take back the city streets as a site for people to linger and engage with each other, not just pass each other by.
